A laser displacement sensor's analog signal contains information on both LARGE and SMALL surface deviations.
When using these sensors an important question to ask is: What exactly do I
need to measure? Is it surface runout or surface finish?
As shown below, High and Low-pass filters can help.

Signal contains both large and small surface deviation information. Surface finish (small deviation) is blocked for an easy surface runout measurement. Surface runout (large deviation) is blocked for easy surface finish measurement.
